Pending Blackberry Messenger Contacts?

My sister recently gave me her Blackberry Bold. I have a Data Plan and everything but, when I use BBM for my personal use, and I add a contact, it says 'Pending' when no requests were sent. Also, when I try to send a message to someone it does not go threw. Please help (: Would be very much appreciated. Just message for any other details.
