Why i cant view my contacts in my email?

I recently updated my yahoo mail, and now when i go to my inbox sometimes my contacts with messenger doesnt show up, but when i go to the drop down box it says i am signed in, and on the part where the contacts are it says im not signed in, sometimes they will show up and sometimes they dont, and its so irritating cause this is my only way most of the time i can keep in touch with my son whom is deployed at this time, if anyone could help i would appreciate it very much, i also click on where it says im not signed into messenger and it dont do anything, Thanks
